Hot snorkeling day

image

Inspired by colors and shapes of the ocean

A warm day with power loss = no AC or fans, no opening of the fridge and basically just accepting what is.

In the morning we spent a couple of hours with our Sri Lankan family and went swimming with the kids of the village. They usually go swimming on Saturdays, and we like to go with them. Today meant a lot of language practice – both for them and us!

Power is back, and Internet = Duolingo for Anders

After swimming it was of course time to eat amma Malika’s home cooked food. Well, there’s time to eat at her place most of the time we come by! Today we got some sweets and tea before having rice and two types of curry, plus a sambal with fresh carrot.

Friends visiting

We’ve also studied the monkeys again today, they have a path they take most days, in the trees just outside our guest house and we love to watch them as they pick fruits, leaves and jump from one tree to the other.

In the late afternoon we went snorkeling for the third time at a reef outside Jungle beach, and today was just amazing!
So many different fishes, corals, shapes and colors. It was a very good time in the water!

Now we’re relaxing, drawing, practicing some language and just thanking ourselves and the universe for another great day to be alive.

With love,
Anders and Wivan

Travel: Sri Lanka

Airport time in Singapore

Arrived in Sri Lanka and Negombo, our first stop on this island we look forward to spend the coming month on.

image

Listening to music

So, after some delay on the way to Kuala Lumpur, we rushed through two (!) security controls and didn’t even have time to get either water or snacks for the flight. And they only took cash on the plane, which we didn’t have…

Midnight snack

So, luckily we were able to buy something from a tiny shop next to the place we stay at. Simple, good and a fun little midnight snack on the room.

We’re here, and look forward to tomorrow. Sri Lanka!

The upsides of house sitting

image

Flowers and vegetables in the garden

There are many things that are good about house sitting for others. We have  written earlier about how little we’ve payed for our accomodation over the first ten months without a home.

image

Ready for morning ride

There are numerous other cool, fun, nice, tasty and friendly reasons why we like house sitting for others. Right now we stay at a small farm with lots of fresh food that we’re allowed to eat while we take care of the place and all of the animals.

image

Fresh chili

Sure, it’s just so much one can eat, but to get to harvest all of these wonderful things is lots of fun, and makes the watering, care and weeding all the better.

image

Lovely raspberries

On the down side, we found traces from a mouse earlier today – not our favourites… But, a dip in the pool usually puts a smile on our faces!

And the horses, cats, chickens and sheep are a real treat for us animal lovers!

Anders view from this morning

Wivan is practicing for her future as a cow girl, riding on a horse and having one extra by the hand.

Happy horse after a mud roll

Today is one of our “watering days”, when bushes and hedges need to be watered. So, there are things to do every day, small tasks like feeding animals, harvesting and taking care of things around the house.

image

What we find though, is that those little things usually are fun and that we like to help other people.

image

Beautiful cale

We learn new things, just by those daily assignments, and appreciate the possibility we have to try out different ways of living. Along the way we have also gotten to know amazing people, friends for life, and seen places we would never have visited otherwise.

image

Fresh walnuts from the trees

It still is amazing to us to follow the weather here in southern France, compared to where we used to live. Here it’s still possible to plant fresh salads and count on their survival without cover. And when we water it now, we know our hosts will benefit from it several months ahead.

The salad that will be served in November

So, there are many up-sides to house- and pet sitting in different places, and as Anders realized earlier today – this is rather different from a Tuesday in the office!

With sunshine,
Anders and Wivan

Captain Flip Flop?

image

One of the nine Azorean islands

“On behalf of Captain Flip Flop and his crew I would like to thank you for flying with us today.”

Really? Did I just fly with Señor Flip Flop? Probably not, but if that’s not his name, it sounds very much like it.

Filling up with water on Pico island

We did a quick drop-off-pick-up in Terceira island on the way here, and now it’s less than an hour before next take off: to Lisboa!

Still happy
