This is to…

… missing people and places we have met during our lives, to family and loved ones we think of, to missing Sweden and all its lovely weirdness, to nature and beauty, to tears and laughter, to love and loss, to life and death. This is to all the things that are part of living and still not understanding one single thing.

Last night we stayed up late, talking about what we want and need right now.

All of a sudden we realized we easily get caught up in what is happening around us here, and that we quite often do things when what we really need in that moment is to take a deep breath and ask ourselves what we want to do or what’s most needed for us right now.

Saying yes to invitations, or to take another step into local life in order to learn and understand more is at times extremely tiresome and challenging. Lots of fun of course, and tiresome.

Moon and palm trees

We start to understand how used we are to having time on our own, to be able to walk out a door without meeting a single person (yes, in Sweden one can actually be alone rather often), how we are longing for the sometimes isolated life many Swedish people live – that we also not always like – it is nice when people come together to help and care for each other.

We start to wonder how to get the mix we’d like to have – to have a place to stay where we can choose when to meet with others and when to be alone. Where people greet and care for each other, are willing to help and still give one another privacy. Where it’s ok to say yes to dinner today, and no thanks tomorrow. Where there are less questions about how we choose to lead our lives and more acceptance for differences. Where the climate is good and there is an openness to views if life we’re not familiar with. Where love flows and there’s a big acceptance for people.

How did we end up helping to repair this roof?

Sure, we’re the first to say that we are all responsible for creating a way of living and an surrounding environment that we like and can thrive in. And yet there are certain things we as humans can not control, and most certainly we can not change others – only ourselves. So who are we, Anders and Wivan, in the middle of all these thoughts and longings?

Right now I think we have more questions than answers, and accept that fact. Who knows what will happen today or tomorrow. We’ll take our responsibility for ourselves and see to our needs, and from that we see what happens and where we end up.

With love, gratitude and many questions,
Wivan

Talkative tuktuk drivers

Tuktuk ride to town

Imagine sitting in a slightly windy spot where traffic is all around and a big bus passes right next to you. Honking horns, people waving and in the middle of this: someone, with his back turned towards you, talking in broken English. He’s asking questions about what country you are from, where you stay, how long you’re staying in Sri Lanka and all of a sudden an odd question about going to a snake farm.

Shopping from the bread tuktuk

This is what a lot of tuktuk rides are like. A kind of game, where you try to guess what question you’re supposed to answer, or asking three times over what he asked last…
It’s really bad if it’s a “disco tuktuk” with large speakers playing loud music, and a driver who’s about to hit every moving object on the road.

A taxi ride in Europe will be like a quiet walk in the park after these months in Asia!

The dream of a “blue lagoon”

For years, Anders has been dreaming of living at a beach in front of a blue lagoon, spending the days in the sun, swimming, snorkling or diving, playing and resting in the shade, enjoying not having to put on more clothes than a pair of shorts – without being cold.

This mental picture was part of what got us started on dreaming of a life in a warmer climate than Sweden’s. One thing we used to keep us remembering what we’d like to do and places we’d like to visit, was the dreamboard we used to have on the wall of our living room.

Our big dreamboard

Our big dreamboard

That board of different inspiring pictures started with a lot questioning about what we did dream of, what we would like to do and where we would love to go visit or stay for longer periods of time.

Questions we keep asking ourselves and each other – because dreams, visions and wants change. Ever noticed how you might feel like having a certain type of food, and then a bit later, you think of something different to eat?
Well, that works for our inner longings as well. Sometimes they change quickly, other times they change over longer periods of time.

Ready for morning swim

So, right now, we enjoy staying in a small home stay on the beach in Amed on eastern Bali. A place we found via airbnb, wich we can warmly reccommend to use when looking for places to stay.

Entrence to our room

Today we were in contact with a dog owner here in Bali, who might need a sitter for a week. But her plans changed during the day, and we therefor are using airbnb again to look for our next place to stay at from Sunday.

FAQ

Here are some of the Frequently Asked Questions we get about our life, lifestyle and living.

Where are you now?
Currently we’re in the island Flores in the Azores. Anders will stay here till the end of May and Wivan till the beginning of June and then we’re going back to Sweden over the summer.

What is it you’re doing?
Taking a time-out, doing what we’ve dreamed of for a long time; travel and have time to think. In order to experience life like locals, we house sit and care for pets at different people’s houses while they’re away from home. We get to stay for free while they have someone to care for their property and their pets = win win.
At times we’ve also done some workaway-projects, where we’ve been working 4-5 hours per day, 5 days per week, in exchange for food and accommodation.

How long will you be travelling?
We don’t know. There’s no complete plan, no time line or set dates. We try and make decisions by feeling what’s inspiring and fun, how we are doing and what places/climate we’d like to be in.

How do you earn money?
Right now we don’t work. We live out of savings and some passive income from work we’ve done earlier with Mannatech. This upcoming summer we will be working in Sweden in our former jobs.

What’s it like not having a place of your own?
It’s working very well for us this far, we feel at peace with our chosen situation and enjoy trying another way of living. At times it’s tiring to move in and out of places but mostly it’s been great. When in mainland Europe we brought our own pillows everyplace we stayed which was a good thing!
We still have a home away from home at Wivan’s mom’s house, where we will spend some time this summer.

What do you do during the days?
Well, we don’t always do very much and we practice to go with the flow, do what we feel like and when we feel like it. Sounds a bit hippie-like to some, but really, it’s a practice! (Especially for Wivan…).

The pets we take care of are always a priority and we love to talk and think about things; patterns, feelings and basically we’re finding out what life is all about. (We will tell you when we’re “done”!).
We also watch movies, cook food, walk and exercise, try and find out what the places we visit are all about, do some sightseeing, swim, read, write, play games (Anders has a PS Vita). And we talk to friends and family, sleep, drink coffee, and do some cleaning (not too much).

Do you speak French now that you’ve been in France?
No, we’ve learned some basics, but it’s a lot left to learn.

What’s it like to spend so much time together?
This far it’s been a lot of fun and we learn things from and with each other; getting to know our selves and each other in new ways and it’s taking our relationship to a new level. At times it would be nice to be able to do more things on our own, like we used to back in Sweden.
Still it feels like a wonderful gift to be able to, and want, to spend so much time together after being a couple for about 16,5 years. We laugh a lot more together now than we used to. That’s fun!

Do you miss Sweden?
Not really. Some people and places but at the moment we don’t miss living in Sweden. Rather, we like having a variety, being able to see and experience new places, people, food and lifestyles. We do look forward to spending the summer in our old hoods and with our dear ones.

New Years resolution

Nowadays, we rarely give any new years resolutions. Change seems to happen anyway when it’s time and when we’re ready. So instead of all those endless lists of “I should do more of this and less of that…”, we’re just setting intentions for the new day, the new week, the new year or whatever new is in front of us.

To do list?

To do list?

And what we really like is to ask ourselves, eachother and others some questions about the passed year and the year ahead of us. Questions like; What did I learn from the most in the past year? How would I like to spend my days in the coming year? Who have been most important in my life for the past 12 months? What moments have made the biggest impact on me as a person? What in particular would I like to learn more about or accomplish the next year?
