After breakfast

Sunrise, before my breakfast

This Thursday holds many possibilities, as most days do. Sometimes we might forget all the possible things to do, be, have or find – because we are busy planning or thinking about plans.

Now I have had vacation for almost two weeks, been at home all the time and enjoyed sleeping until the daylight comes – no alarm clock and no routines, just take the day as it is. Still there have been some planning going on: when to visit grandma, what day to go to the gym, calling to a office-person on certain hours and celebrating New Year on the exact day and time – that takes planning!

This morning I remembered what one of our friends in France use to say when we ask what’s on today’s schedule.

– After breakfast, he says.

No decisions until he’s had breakfast. Of course, he does have days that are planned: going to the market on Saturday or when friends are coming for dinner etc. But when it’s a blank day in the calendar, it’s always ‘after breakfast’.

Before breakfast today I took a walk and decided to not make any plans until I had eaten my breakfast. So here I am, finishing up my coffee, rice cakes and smoothie – with no idea of what comes next in this day.

I love to play in life – not always being so serious or “grown up”. This too is a way of playing: to see what really wants to unfold today.

My morning meal is almost finished and I am excited to find out what comes out of this day!

One step at a time

How do you make a change? One step at a time.

Want to climb a mountain? Take one first step, and then another, and another…

Reminding myself to let life be a process, nothing to rush or try to arrange in beforehand. There are plans for the fall, thoughts about how I want it to turn out and since I can be a person of action, I would love it to just be a list of things for me to do or organize. But it’s not – there are others involved with timelines and decisions out of my control and I have to just live with it.

For example; we have decided to stay in Sweden at least over the fall, probably longer, and I’ve applied for some jobs. The outcome of that is out of my control at the moment. I did my part, and now it’s just waiting to see what happens.
In combination with that, Anders and I will need a place to stay during the weeks – so we’ve been looking at mobile homes and small apartments online. Nothing to decide on or act on just yet.
But it would be great to know how it all will turn out, what the fall actually will look like. Well, isn’t that what many of us wish a lot of the time?

The problem with having too clear plans or expectations is that we tend to miss the opportunities that show up, or forget how to be flexible and adjust to what is in the moment.

So, let’s take one step at a time and let the path light up bit by bit.

The Plan for 2016

There is no exact plan. But we have some sketches and ideas and a few dates that are set. Now, when we’re exploring this warm water, sunny beach-and-palm tree-area of South East Asia, we take one step at a time. Our next destination, Sri Lanka, was a choice of where there’s dry season and good diving in January/February. Then we checked out the visa rules and from there we took the next step of booking tickets, checking out places to stay and did some basic research.

On the 8th of February it’s Chinese New Year and lots of people have vacation the weeks before and after. Several friends have told us to consider our choice of place to stay during that period because it can get very crowded at tourist areas. So, we might extend our visas for Sri Lanka and stay in some quiet location during Chinese New Year. We’ll see what happens within the coming weeks.

The next set date we have is late May or beginning of June, when we’re going to a family reunion in the US and one of our nephews is graduating from high school. And then, after that… there’s a plan of going to Sweden over the summer and Wivan wants to work during the summer. After that we don’t know! Probably we’ll want to go someplace warm again the next fall and winter, but we haven’t decided yet. And we don’t know if we’ll be working or doing volunteer work, if we’ll continue to just explore life and living or if we’ll be diving and surfing around the globe like the beach bums we are becoming.

We have decided to live and use our money while we can and still have a lust to explore and try different ways of living and locations. Our commitment is to live life fully, to follow our dreams even if it’s different from how “most people” do things. To give ourselves and each other space to grow as people and to see what happens when we follow our inner longings.

It’s a privilege to be able to live like this, and to have the means of time and money to be able to, and it’s also a choice to not have a house of our own or to settle down again just yet.

There are ups and downs of living on “the road” like this, and something we experience now is that we miss seeing friends and family, and to have people to hang out with. Sure, we love spending time on our own and to have lots of quiet moments, but there’s also a need of being around other people.

We welcome the year of 2016 with all that it might bring, and we are open to learn, listen and try. Our intention is to live with our hearts and minds open, to make choices from clear “YES!”-answers rather than what’s logic – and we’re curious to see how that effects us and the world around.
